Important Update on the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR)

Sunrays over a green forest in summer.

Yesterday, the European Commission proposed targeted amendments to the EUDR. Aiming to ensure smoother implementation, reduce administrative burden, and support small operators, all while maintaining the regulation’s core environmental objectives.

Key proposed changes:

  • Simplified requirements for downstream operators and traders: Only the first placer on the EU market will need to submit due diligence statements (DDS).
  • Reduced obligations for micro and small primary operators: A one-off simplified declaration may suffice, especially when national database records are available.
  • Phased roll-out of the EUDR IT system: Adjustments will ensure it can handle higher transaction volumes without disruption.
  • Extended transition timelines: Large and medium companies remain on track for 30 December 2025, with a 6-month grace period; micro and small enterprises now have until 30 December 2026.

While this is still a proposal and not yet law, please be aware that this is just a proposal; it is not yet legal. The proposal needs to be approved by both the Council of the European Union and the European Parliament it marks a significant step toward a more practical, scalable implementation of the EUDR.
